Ajay Chawla
- Member, Bio-X
Clinical Focus
- Endocrinology / Diabetes,
- Endocrinology and Metabolism
Research Interest
We investigate the mechanisms by which nuclear receptors (such as PPARs) and coactivator proteins control programs of metabolism and inflammation in tissues. Our work is highly pertinent to various disease states, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, autoimmunity and aging.
Douglas Brutlag
- Professor Emeritus, Biochemistry
Research Interest
My primary interest is to understand the flow of information from the genome to the phenotype of an organism. This interest includes predicting the structure and function of genes and proteins from their primary sequence, predicting function from structure and finally simulating protein folding and ligand docking. These goals are the same as the goals of molecular biology, however, we use primarily computational approaches.

Research Interest
Hearing loss is one of the most common sensory disorders. The pathology underlying sensory hearing loss is the irreversible loss of the inner ear sensory hair cells. These cells are highly specialized and function to transform sound pressure waves to electrical neural signals. Since mammals are unable to regenerate lost sensory hair cells, there is much interest in investigating the potential of endogenous progenitor cells in the cochlear and vestibular systems of mice.

Research Interest
Our research aims to improve the global quality of care for patients with Urologic cancer with a particular focus on kidney cancer. We are evaluating the comparative effectiveness of various kidney cancer surgeries and their impact on chronic kidney disease and its downstream effects. We are investigating nanofluidic proteomic assays to diagnose kidney cancer and signatures of response to therapy. Finally, we are evaluating technologies applicable to endoscopic, laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
